VOLUNTEER APPLICATION

Central Florida Samoyed Rescue, Inc. is staffed entirely by volunteers who give their time and effort to providing permanent, loving homes for our rescue Samoyeds. There are many ways to help rescue, some of which do not require any special knowledge of Samoyeds, or even dogs in general. Other areas may require expertise in handling dogs or detailed knowledge of Samoyeds. Please think carefully about what you are willing to do and what you can not do. Dedicated volunteers are desperately needed, but lack of follow through can make a hard job even more difficult! Foster Homes are always needed, but fostering dogs is not the only way to help. (If you would like to foster a rescue Samoyed, please complete our Foster Application.) If you are serious about helping in other ways on a long-term basis, then please submit our volunteer application. If you feel that you can help out on a case by case basis only, please let us know that is the case. (We reserve the right to refuse an applicant.)

Detailed information must be obtained and maintained on our rescues and applications. Our contact information must be kept current with shelters and other contact points. We must be kept aware of ordinances and other state and local issues that may affect our rescue efforts.

Public education helps promote responsible dog ownership and reduce the number of Samoyeds in need of a new home. CFSR participates in adoption fairs and other special events designed to distribute information and answer questions about dog ownership and the Samoyed breed. We do not do “on the spot” adoptions, however, Samoyeds may be present at these events to allow those interested in adopting a rescue to meet our wonderful dogs. This also provides an opportunity for “on the job” training for those interested in learning more about Samoyeds and assisting with other aspects of rescue.

Samoyeds are primarily a herding and sledding breed. As such, they can be runners, barkers, diggers, and chewers, and usually have a tendency to pull on lead. They are also a double-coated breed which sheds profusely. An average Samoyed weighs 35 to 65 pounds, possibly more. Please keep these characteristics in mind when indicating the following areas that you would like to assist with.

Rescues often require transportation from shelters or surrendering owners, to or from veterinary and/or grooming appointments and adoption events, and to foster homes. Our volunteers are concentrated in the Central Florida (Orlando/Tampa) area, however, we are sometimes contacted by shelters, surrendering owners and applicants outside of this area, or may need to arrange transportation at a time when the foster home is unavailable. CFSR recommends the use of a crate or other method of confinement within your vehicle, as you will be putting a strange dog in your vehicle.

I have a reliable vehicle and would like to assist with transporting dogs.

We are often contacted about dogs that may or may not be correctly identified as adoptable Samoyeds. If you are familiar with the characteristics and personality of Samoyeds, have a digital camera available and/or are familiar with the differences between Samoyeds and other similar breeds, you can assist us by checking on possible rescue candidates and reporting information or taking photographs to help with our evaluation of the dog.

I am familiar with the Samoyed breed and would like to assist with identifying and evaluating possible adoption candidates in shelters.

We try to carefully match our applications with our rescues. This often involves phone interviews with applicants and/or checking the environment that the dog will be placed into. These functions require the most knowledge of the Samoyed personality.
